Steel is one of the most common metals used in today’s life. It is an alloy made up of iron, carbon and other elements. Because of its tensile strength and low cost it is used in buildings, ships, automobiles, machines, appliances, weapons, tools. Research on this metal has given 2 improvised types of steel.
- Weathering steel: Also known as ‘cor-ten’ steel was developed to eliminate the need of painting and forms rust like appearance after several years of exposure to weather. - Stainless steel: It is an alloy which has more percentage of chromium than normal steel making it high corrosion resistance. Laser cut stainless steel products are common in electronic enclosures, toys, robots, office items, kitchen products among few.
Addition of chromium makes it corrosion resistant, addition of nickel enhances this property. Other metals like copper, titanium are added to improve the properties and structure of stainless steel. It is preferred in making of kitchen ware because this metal does not affect taste of food and is easy to clean.
